Evening … References:–>John 11:4
This sickness is not unto death. From our Lord’s words we learn that there is a limit to sickness. Here is an “unto” within which its ultimate end is restrained, and beyond which it cannot go. Lazarus might pass through death, but death was not to be the ultimatum of his sickness. In all sickness, the Lord saith to the waves of pain, “Hitherto shall ye go, but no further.” His fixed purpose is not the destruction, but the instruction of His people. Wisdom hangs up the thermometer at the furnace mouth, and regulates the heat. 1. The limit is encouragingly comprehensive. The God of providence has limited the time, manner, intensity, repetition, and effects of all our sicknesses; each throb is decreed, each sleepless hour predestinated, each relapse ordained, each depression of spirit foreknown, and each sanctifying result eternally purposed. Nothing great or small escapes the ordaining hand of Him who numbers the hairs of our head. 2. This limit is wisely adjusted to our strength, to the end designed, and to the grace apportioned. Affliction comes not at haphazard-the weight of every stroke of the rod is accurately measured. He who made no mistakes in balancing the clouds and meting out the heavens, commits no errors in measuring out the ingredients which compose the medicine of souls. We cannot suffer too much nor be relieved too late. 3. The limit is tenderly appointed. The knife of the heavenly Surgeon never cuts deeper than is absolutely necessary. “He doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.” A mother’s heart cries, “Spare my child”; but no mother is more compassionate than our gracious God. When we consider how hard-mouthed we are, it is a wonder that we are not driven with a sharper bit. The thought is full of consolation, that He who has fixed the bounds of our habitation, has also fixed the bounds of our tribulation.August 18

Morning … References:–>Jeremiah 51:51
Strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the Lord’s house. In this account the faces of the Lord’s people were covered with shame, for it was a terrible thing that men should intrude into the Holy Place reserved for the priests alone. Everywhere about us we see like cause for sorrow. How many ungodly men are now educating with the view of entering into the ministry! What a crying sin is that solemn lie by which our whole population is nominally comprehended in a National Church! How fearful it is that ordinances should be pressed upon the unconverted, and that among the more enlightened churches of our land there should be such laxity of discipline. If the thousands who will read this portion shall all take this matter before the Lord Jesus this day, He will interfere and avert the evil which else will come upon His Church. To adulterate the Church is to pollute a well, to pour water upon fire, to sow a fertile field with stones. May we all have grace to maintain in our own proper way the purity of the Church, as being an assembly of believers, and not a nation, an unsaved community of unconverted men. Our zeal must, however, begin at home. Let us examine ourselves as to our right to eat at the Lord’s table. Let us see to it that we have on our wedding garment, lest we ourselves be intruders in the Lord’s sanctuaries. Many are called, but few are chosen; the way is narrow, and the gate is strait. O for grace to come to Jesus aright, with the faith of God’s elect. He who smote Uzzah for touching the ark is very jealous of His two ordinances; as a true believer I may approach them freely, as an alien I must not touch them lest I die. Heartsearching is the duty of all who are baptized or come to the Lord’s table. “Search me, O God, and know my way, try me and know my heart.”

Exodus 21:15-17(15) And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. (16) And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. (17) And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
Maltreatment of a parent through striking or cursing is placed on a par with murder and kidnapping and is punished in the same way—death.
The word curse simply means “to belittle,” “to make light of,” “to be contemptuous of.”
In the book of Matthew, as Jesus was giving the Sermon on the Mount, He says:
You have heard that it was said by them of old time, You shall not kill, and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. (Matthew 5:21-22)
Raca means empty-headed; moron. It is a form of cursing, belittling, or speaking contemptuously of. The person who says this shall be in danger of the council.
But whosoever shall say, You fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. (Matthew 5:22)
Jesus is saying that He agrees with Exodus 21:15-17. For a child to speak contemptuously of or to consider his parents to be foolish puts him in danger of the death penalty. This is God’s law, and here, Jesus Christ, our Savior, says that He agrees with it. He will be the God who judges. Cursing is placed on a par with murder, and there is a reason why: because it proceeds from this same attitude of heart. Thus, it is punishable by death.
The majesty and office of God is violated in the person of the parent because God regards the parent as His representative and as a type of Him. So, the fifth commandment is broken, and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). It is that simple. In terms of the penalty, it is just as wrong to curse parents as it is to curse God.

Evening … References:–>Psalm 31:4
Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for Thou art my strength. Our spiritual foes are of the serpent’s brood, a and seek to ensnare us by subtlety. The prayer before us supposes the possibility of the believer being caught like a bird. So deftly does the fowler do his work, that simple ones are soon surrounded by the net. The text asks that even out of Satan’s meshes the captive one may be delivered; this is a proper petition, and one which can be granted: from between the jaws of the lion, and out of the belly of hell, can eternal love rescue the saint. It may need a sharp pull to save a soul from the net of temptations, and a mighty pull to extricate a man from the snares of malicious cunning, but the Lord is equal to every emergency, and the most skilfully placed nets of the hunter shall never be able to hold His chosen ones. Woe unto those who are so clever at net laying; they who tempt others shall be destroyed themselves. “For Thou art my strength.” What an inexpressible sweetness is to be found in these few words! How joyfully may we encounter toils, and how cheerfully may we endure sufferings, when we can lay hold upon celestial strength. Divine power will rend asunder all the toils of our enemies, confound their politics, and frustrate their knavish tricks; he is a happy man who has such matchless might engaged upon his side. Our own strength would be of little service when embarrassed in the nets of base cunning, but the Lord’s strength is ever available; we have but to invoke it, and we shall find it near at hand. If by faith we are depending alone upon the strength of the mighty God of Israel, we may use our holy reliance as a plea in supplication. “Lord, evermore Thy face we seek:
Tempted we are, and poor, and weak;
Keep us with lowly hearts, and meek.
Let us not fall. Let us not fall.” August 20

Morning … References:–>2 Samuel 23:1
The sweet psalmist of Israel. Among all the saints whose lives are recorded in Holy Writ, David possesses an experience of the most striking, varied, and instructive character. In his history we meet with trials and temptations not to be discovered, as a whole, in other saints of ancient times, and hence he is all the more suggestive a type of our Lord. David knew the trials of all ranks and conditions of men. Kings have their troubles, and David wore a crown: the peasant has his cares, and David handled a shepherd’s crook: the wanderer has many hardships, and David abode in the caves of Engedi: the captain has his difficulties, and David found the sons of Zeruiah too hard for him. The psalmist was also tried in his friends, his counsellor Ahithophel forsook him, “He that eateth bread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me.” His worst foes were they of his own household: his children were his greatest affliction. The temptations of poverty and wealth, of honour and reproach, of health and weakness, all tried their power upon him. He had temptations from without to disturb his peace, and from within to mar his joy. David no sooner escaped from one trial than he fell into another; no sooner emerged from one season of despondency and alarm, than he was again brought into the lowest depths, and all God’s waves and billows rolled over him. It is probably from this cause that David’s psalms are so universally the delight of experienced Christians. Whatever our frame of mind, whether ecstasy or depression, David has exactly described our emotions. He was an able master of the human heart, because he had been tutored in the best of all schools-the school of heart-felt, personal experience. As we are instructed in the same school, as we grow matured in grace and in years, we increasingly appreciate David’s psalms, and find them to be “green pastures.” My soul, let David’s experience cheer and counsel thee this day.

Matthew 13:48-50(48) Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. (49) So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, (50) And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus tells us that the bad fish are thrown into the fire. John the Baptist says this in a slightly different way in Matthew 3:12: “[Jesus] will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” This principle appears somewhat differently in the Parable of the Sheep and Goats (Matthew 25:31-46): Christ is Judge, and He sets the sheep on His right hand and the goats on His left. He judges that the sheep can enter eternal life, while the goats receive the destructive judgment of fire.
Although a final judgment is coming for the world, the church is now under God’s judgment (I Peter 4:17; Revelation 11:1-2). Not only is the sentence coming, but our conduct and growth are also currently being judged—Christ is evaluating whether we meet His high standards. Ultimately, everyone is judged the same way, according to the same standard, by the same criteria. The “bad fish” among us are not ours to judge, but Jesus, the righteous Judge, has promised to judge with equity (Psalm 98:9).
Matthew 13:50 says they are thrown “into the furnace of fire.” A similar thing occurs in the Parable of the Weat and the Tares: At the end of the age, the tares will be gathered and thrown into the furnace (verses 30, 41-42). The emphasis in the Parable of the Tares is on the wicked and their evil works and their subsequent judgment. However, in the Parable of the Dragnet, instead of highlighting the wickedness, Jesus focuses on the process of judgment, not necessarily on condemning evildoers. Some people are condemned for doing wicked things, but others are saved and rewarded for doing the good works assigned to them. God’s calling is first impartial, and then His judgment is absolutely fair. The wicked will get only what they deserve.
God’s “catch” is the church, a chosen cross section of the entire world; He casts a wide net. However, once those He calls accept Jesus Christ, God does show Himself partial to the “good fish”—those who love Him, obey Him, serve others, grow, and produce spiritual fruit. In the process of salvation, God judges whether we are good, useable fish or substandard fish fit only for the fire. He judges us according to how we measure up against His standard of righteousness, “the perfect man, . . . the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13). God throws His net into the world and drags us in, and if we are unwilling to comply with His holy standard, our eternal judgment will be to be discarded in the fire.
Presently, the church’s function is not judicial but declarative. On the one hand, the church is responsible to warn sinners of the dire consequences of sin and of the time of God’s judgment coming upon all humanity. On the other hand, we are to witness of God’s way of life, as well as to proclaim the return of Christ’s return and the establishment of God’s wonderful, benevolent government here on earth. That is good news!

Evening … References:–>Nehemiah 3:8
And they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall. Cities well fortified have broad walls, and so had Jerusalem in her glory. The New Jerusalem must, in like manner, be surrounded and preserved by a broad wall of nonconformity to the world, and separation from its customs and spirit. The tendency of these days break down the holy barrier, and make the distinction between the church and the world merely nominal. Professors are no longer strict and Puritanical, questionable literature is read on all hands, frivolous pastimes are currently indulged, and a general laxity threatens to deprive the Lord’s peculiar people of those sacred singularities which separate them from sinners. It will be an ill day for the church and the world when the proposed amalgamation shall be complete, and the sons of God and the daughters of men shall be as one: then shall another deluge of wrath be ushered in. Beloved reader, be it your aim in heart, in word, in dress, in action to maintain the broad wall, remembering that the friendship of this world is enmity against God. The broad wall afforded a pleasant place of resort for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, from which they could command prospects of the surrounding country. This reminds us of the Lord’s exceeding broad commandments, in which we walk at liberty in communion with Jesus, overlooking the scenes of earth, and looking out towards the glories of heaven. Separated from the world, and denying ourselves all ungodliness and fleshly lusts, we are nevertheless not in prison, nor restricted within narrow bounds; nay, we walk at liberty, because we keep His precepts. Come, reader, this evening walk with God in His statutes. As friend met friend upon the city wall, so meet thou thy God in the way of holy prayer and meditation. The bulwarks of salvation thou hast a right to traverse, for thou art a freeman of the royal burgh, a citizen of the metropolis of the universe.August 21

Morning … References:–>Proverbs 11:25
He that watereth shall be watered also himself. We are here taught the great lesson, that to get, we must give; that to accumulate, we must scatter; that to make ourselves happy, we must make others happy; and that in order to become spiritually vigorous, we must seek the spiritual good of others. In watering others, we are ourselves watered. How? Our efforts to be useful, bring out our powers for usefulness. We have latent talents and dormant faculties, which are brought to light by exercise. Our strength for labour is hidden even from ourselves, until we venture forth to fight the Lord’s battles, or to climb the mountains of difficulty. We do not know what tender sympathies we possess until we try to dry the widow’s tears, and soothe the orphan’s grief. We often find in attempting to teach others, that we gain instruction for ourselves. Oh, what gracious lessons some of us have learned at sick beds! We went to teach the Scriptures, we came away blushing that we knew so little of them. In our converse with poor saints, we are taught the way of God more perfectly for ourselves and get a deeper insight into divine truth. So that watering others makes us humble. We discover how much grace there is where we had not looked for it; and how much the poor saint may outstrip us in knowledge. Our own comfort is also increased by our working for others. We endeavour to cheer them, and the consolation gladdens our own heart. Like the two men in the snow; one chafed the other’s limbs to keep him from dying, and in so doing kept his own blood in circulation, and saved his own life. The poor widow of Sarepta gave from her scanty store a supply for the prophet’s wants, and from that day she never again knew what want was. Give then, and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, and running over.

Luke 21:36(36) Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
While prayer is important, notice that in Luke 21:36, Jesus does not use just the word “pray” but the phrase “pray always.” Why is this significant?
As we begin to answer this question, it is good to know that the word “always” is a translation of three Greek words. A literal translation of those three words, en pantí kairoó, would be “in all times,” and many Bible translations have chosen to use similar wording, such as “at all times.” Other versions may use “all the time,” while some use words like “constant” and “constantly.” Weymouth’s New Testament goes so far as to read, “every moment.”
Christ is speaking, not just about prayer, but also about the frequency of our prayers. How often are we in contact with God throughout our day? Do we give Him some time in the morning or evening, but the rest of the day He is in none, or very few, of our thoughts? Doing so places us in very dangerous company (Psalm 10:4).
Laodiceans have lukewarm relationships with God, thus Christ has to say to them in Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” He calls for them to rekindle the relationship. Making the first move, He suggests what friends who have a close relationship do—they share a meal. What happens at a meal with friends? Conversation, which is what prayer is. Humans, whether with people or with God, build their relationships the same way: They talk to each other—a lot.
We can see why Christ tells those living at the end, when Laodiceanism reigns, that we have to overcome and pray always. Generally, the relationship between God and the Christian is weak and must be rebuilt, requiring considerable conversation, prayer, at all times of the day.
If we observed a marriage in which the husband and wife only mumbled to each other a little in the morning and/or a little at night, we would conclude that that relationship was in trouble. Our God who sees all knows the same thing when He experiences it.
How does a Christian “pray always”? In one of Herbert W. Armstrong’s radio broadcasts on the book of Hebrews, he says, paraphrased, “You need to be in contact with God every hour!” I Thessalonians 5:17 instructs, “Pray without ceasing.” Hebrews 13:15 urges us to offer prayer to God “continually.” God’s purpose for us requires a great deal of contact with Him.

WHAT HAPPENS IN HEAVEN ?

This is one of the nicest e-mails I have seen and is so true:

I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We
walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel
guide stopped in front of the first section and said, “This is the
Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to God said in prayer are received”

I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many
angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps
from people all over the world.

Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section.

The angel then said to me,”This is the Packaging and Delivery Section.
Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and
delivered to the living persons who asked for them. “I noticed again how
busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station,
since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for
delivery to Earth.

Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the door of
a very small station. To my great surprise, only one angel was seated
there, idly doing nothing. “This is the Acknowledgment Section,” my angel
friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed “How is it that there
is no work going on here?” I asked.

“So sad,” the angel sighed. “After people receive the blessings that they
asked for, very few send back acknowledgments.”

”How does one acknowledge God’s blessings?” I asked.

“Simple,” the angel answered. Just say, “Thank you, Lord.”

“What blessings should they acknowledge?” I asked

“If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof
overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world. If
you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish,
you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.”

“And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the
world who has that opportunity.”

“If you woke up this morning with more health than illness .. you are
more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day.”

“If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of
imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation .. you are
ahead of 700 million people in the world.”

“If you can attend a church

or synagogue without the fear of harassment, arrest,
torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion
people in the world!”

“If your parents are still alive and still married …you are very rare .”

“If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you’re
unique to all those in doubt and despair.”

Ok, what now? How can I start?

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that
someone was thinking of you as very special and you are more blessed than
over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all

Have a good day, count your blessings, and if you want, pass this along to
remind everyone else how blessed we all are.

ATTN:

Acknowledge Dept.: “Thank you Lord, for giving me the ability to share

In Russia, Protestant denominations are biding their time.

“We are waiting for the future,” says Viktor Vitko, the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s religious liberty leader for Northern Asia and Eastern Europe. Vitko believes Russia — which recently elected a new president, Dmitry Medvedev — is on the cusp of change, and he wants Adventists to help steer the country toward more freedom of belief.

Events such as this weekend’s Religious Liberty Festival in St. Petersburg are a vital means of keeping freedom of belief an “urgent” topic of discussion among citizens and leaders in the country, says Vitko, who directs the church’s department of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty (PARL) for the region.

Despite the separation of church and state mandated by Russia’s constitution, Vitko says citizens do not yet enjoy full-fledged religious liberty. Seeking a post-Soviet ideological anchor, many Russians, he says, are finding stability in the country’s dominant Orthodox religion. Some two-thirds of Russians now count themselves Orthodox, roughly twice as many as when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

But Vitko worries most Russians are seeking a sense of nationalism, not moral guidance. With the Orthodoxy and the state seemingly in lockstep, Vitko says even existing religious liberties could vanish if Adventists and other minority Protestant denominations don’t work to maintain positive relations with officials.

The July 4 to 5 festival falls on the 6th anniversary of the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is expected to draw more than 1,000 attendees, including government and Orthodox Church representatives, human rights workers, scientists, journalists and religious liberty proponents, Vitko says.

The 61-year-old’s technical education and degree from church-run Zaoksky Theological Seminary have informed his religious liberty work over the years — he has held PARL directorships at several local church offices since 1995 and has worked at Euro-Asia church headquarters for five years. To help usher in this weekend’s event, Vitko outlined some of the church’s religious liberty efforts and concerns in an interview with ANN. Excerpts, translated by Vladimir Iyevenko, follow.

Adventist News Network: This isn’t the first religious liberty festival you’ve helped organize in Russia. What goals are on the table this time?

Viktor Vitko: We hope that this festival will draw the attention of the city’s residents, of government authorities and of other leaders and organizations in St. Petersburg. We hope our discussions show that issues of religious freedom are urgent and that many people are striving to improve human rights and freedom of conscience in Russia. We will also show a special film during the festival to honor the opening of a monument in the Levashovo wasteland near St. Petersburg, where, in the 1930s under Stalin, many people including several Adventists were tortured and executed. We want the authorities and the residents in St. Petersburg to remember this, and to know that religious liberty is still a problem in this country.

ANN: The Russian constitution mandates separation of church and state. Why have you indicated that some freedoms remain stymied?

Vitko: We have observed over the past several years, unfortunately, the clericalization of power by the Russian Orthodox Church. According to prominent Russian experts, the Orthodox Church is striving to reestablish a unified society under the banner of clericalism, controlled by the political elite. Orthodoxy provides the ideological common ground for society, the same role which the ideology of the Communist Party once provided in this country. That’s the reality in Russia today.

ANN: How does the Adventist Church navigate such a strong religious tradition in the country to work for more freedom of belief?

Vitko: Our church combines its efforts with other protestant churches in Russia to host some joint events, and here in Euro Asia, conduct religious liberty conferences, in which scientists and official representatives take part in ongoing discussions with a purpose to block this trend toward clericalization that is very prevalent in this country. This weekend’s festival in St. Petersburg will be one such event meant to help rebalance church and state relations.

ANN: How can you measure the effectiveness of such conferences? Do you see any tangible results?

Vitko: That is not an easy question. What we are doing most is raising awareness. We expect that the new Russian president will help move relations between church and state in Russia toward a model more fitting of a secular state. We hope that President [Dmitry] Medvedev will develop the process in the right direction. Of course we do not know — will see what the future brings.

ANN: Western news reports indicate that the Russian government is reining in the country’s media. Have the church’s outreach efforts also been hindered?

Vitko: We can only make connections by using denominational channels of communication. We have very little contact with the state mass media. We rely heavily on the Internet for outreach and spreading news about the church. Unfortunately the public media is government controlled and not willing to publish any information about church events or reflect our point of view on issues. We are benefited greatly by the Slavic Center for Law and Justice, which helps raise public awareness of Protestant churches in Russia. This organization defends the rights of all religious organizations, and it sets legal precedents in the courts, which are reported on by the mass media. They also issue a journal, ‘Religion and Law,’ which publishes information about many denominations, including our church. So in that way we have a chance to publish articles reflecting the Adventist point of view.

ANN: As the church’s religious liberty director for the region, you’ve repeatedly emphasized that talking to other religious groups is a vital part of fostering religious freedom. That being said, what is the Adventist Church’s current relationship with the Russian Orthodoxy?

Vitko: In spite of the many distinctions, we have very good contact and we maintain very good relations with the Orthodox Church. Last year, John Graz [Adventist world church PARL director] visited Russia and we organized a visit with one of the heads of the Orthodox Church to discuss issues of religious freedom. We also have good relations established with the president of the Russian federation, with government officials, with their commissioner for human rights and other state representatives. Through those contacts, we are active in attending religious freedom events and collaborating with representatives from other Protestant religions. Our goal with these events is that the citizens of Russia and government officials will see that our churches can influence positively upon society and be valuable members in Russia.

Environment an ‘Adventist’ issue?

The Seventh-day Adventists are being urged by their top leader to develop an approach to environmental issues that is consistent with the church’s historical values.

World church president, Pastor Jan Paulsen, writing in the July issue of Adventist World magazine, says he hopes Adventists “will move toward a fuller discussion of Adventism and environmental responsibility.”

Acknowledging that environmentalism “may sometimes take on a flavor or set of dynamics that is not the same as care for the environment,” such as political and economic agendas, Paulsen says the church could emphasize connections between a clean environment and optimum health.

“When we peel back the layers that surround ‘environmentalism,’ we find ideas that resonate also with our own deeply held beliefs and values: care for God’s world and care for our fellow human beings,” Paulsen states.

Paulsen also states the church could focus on its historic stance on “whole person” care and vegetarian advocacy, which requires fewer resources to produce than a non-vegetarian diet.

“When we choose a simple lifestyle and exercise restraint in our wants, when we emphasize the spiritual above the material and choose relationships before ‘things,’ we are following in the footsteps of our Lord,” Paulsen states.

Seventh-day Adventists in Valle Hermoso, Ecuador last month were the first recipients of a One-Day Church, a new Adventist Church and lay sponsored ready-to-assemble church that can be built within a day.

Maranatha Volunteers began construction on June 19 at 7:30 a.m. and finished by 4 p.m. Providing a framework and roof, the One-Day Church program leaves local members to finish the walls with readily available materials. By the end of the day, members had finished bamboo walls and had even brought in a platform, keyboard and 135 chairs.

“This is a community of believers who have waited for many years for a permanent house of worship, said Kyle Feiss, Maranatha’s vice president for Marketing. “They saw the answers to their prayers realized in a few short hours.”

Feiss said church members in Valle Hermoso seemed surprised with the pace of construction. “They did not believe that a church could be built in one day,” he said.

The Valle Hermoso Adventist Church is a new church plant with relatively few members. But Bible workers have been studying with more than 75 people in the region, and 12 people were baptized at the church dedication the following Saturday morning.

The easily assembled, low-cost church kit is an effort to meet the needs of 200,000 Adventist congregations around the world that do not have a permanent church home.

In the coming months, Maranatha plans to construct and additional 66 One-Day Church projects in Ecuador and several One-Day School projects in rural parts of the country.

The structures are built with cost, quality, durability and portability in mind, said Maranatha supporter and businessman Garwin McNeilus, who helped launch the One-Day Church program. The basic building is easily adjusted to suit a variety of cultures and geographic areas, and the galvanized steel frame withstands termites, rust, heat and hurricanes.

A joint venture of Adventist-Laymen’s Services and Industries and Maranatha with support from the Adventist Church, the One-Day Church is meant to meet the needs of some 200,000 congregations around the world that do not have a permanent church home.

Seventh-day Adventist Chaplain Gary Councell remembers a church-run military support center was once a spiritual oasis amid secular military life. For decades, soldiers could depend on food, a clean cot and fellowship with likeminded Adventists during the Sabbath hours at the hostel-like facilities.

In a decision seemingly at odds with the church’s commitment to minister to its enlisted members, Adventist Church leadership in North America voted at its 2007 year-end meetings to shut down the church’s last military support center.

But closing the “underutilized” and “costly” center will allow church leadership in North America to help even more soldiers by “redirecting resources from buildings to people,” says Councell, who spent 32 years as a U.S. Army chaplain and now directs the world church’s Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries at church headquarters near Washington, D.C.

“We have to be good stewards,” Councell says. “We will continue to minister to soldiers overseas, but we will be investing those dollars in support of Adventist chapel worship groups, pastoral converge, continued religious retreats, worship aids, Sabbath school outreach and training in leadership.”

Church leadership will also funnel some resources toward educating young members about the challenges to faith they’ll face if they join the military, such as Sabbath observance, dietary issues and bearing arms.

Today, just one of the original six centers remains — the oldest, in Frankfurt, Germany. Opened since 1952, the center will close June 30, North American church leadership decided.

While up to 30 Adventist soldiers a night would make use of the facilities in peak years — from the 1950s to 70s — Councell says the centers have been sparsely trafficked for years, hardly justifying the $100,000 — plus a stipend for the directing chaplain — each requires to operate per year.

But with increasingly more soldiers and military resources concentrated in Middle Eastern countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq, keeping support centers in comparatively peaceful regions such as Europe and Korea open isn’t a wise use of limited finances, church leadership concluded.

ACM will support local lay soldiers in regions where few Adventist chaplains are stationed or in countries where security concerns hinder their work. One such lay soldier is using ACM study guides to run an Adventist military chapel worship group in Iraq now attended by 37 people, Councell says.

The centers were originally set up to remind Adventist servicemen that, “The church cares about you,” says Dick Stenbakken, who retired in 2004 as ACM director, a post he held for 14 years. “We make no judgments about why you are here. We just want to support you.”

While the methods may have changed, the message hasn’t changed, church leaders say. Plans are in place to establish ACM field representatives in the northwest and northeast regions of the U.S., as well as church “homes” for military members assigned overseas. As the church caters its ministry to the changing needs of enlisted church members, it will better be able to “enhance [their] spiritual well-being,” NAD church president Don Schneider said of the decision to close the centers.

A Seventh-day Adventist pioneer in pediatric neurosurgery who overcame childhood poverty and achieved worldwide renown received the highest civilian award bestowed by the United States government today.

Dr. Benjamin S. Carson Sr. was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom for his outstanding contributions to medicine and his motivating influence on America’s young people, U.S. President George W. Bush said during a morning ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

Perhaps best known for his successful efforts in separating conjoined twins and controlling brain seizures in children, Carson is chief of pediatric neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Carson, an inner city Detroit, Michigan native, overcame a “grim future” of poverty, crime and violence to become “a scholar, a healer and a leader,” Bush told the audience of cabinet members, Congressional representatives and medal recipients and their families.

“For his skills as a surgeon, his high moral standards and his dedication to helping others, I am proud to bestow this honor,” Bush said.

The soft-spoken Carson later told Adventist News Network that while national recognition is “obviously very nice,” he feels like he’s “just along for the ride.”

“You basically put everything in the Lord’s hands, and he just guides your life,” Carson said. “It’s always been amazing to me, the things He’s made possible.”

During the ceremony, Bush singled out Carson’s mother, Sonya, who — seated near Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and former Senator Bob Dole — stood to receive the president’s welcome. “Some moms are simply forces of nature who never take ‘no’ for an answer,” Bush said. “I understand,” he added, alluding to his own mother and eliciting laughter from the audience.

Sonya, a single parent of two sons, Bush explained, required the young Carson and his brother to check out library books and write weekly reports on them. Never letting on that she couldn’t read the reports, Sonya would mark and return them, knowing education was her sons’ best opportunity, he said.

Bush praised Carson and his wife, Candy, for founding The Carson Scholars Fund, Inc., a non-profit national scholarship fund that promotes similar academic achievement by recognizing and rewarding students in grades 4-11 who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to community.

“Our nation is falling so far behind technologically,” Carson told ANN, adding that advocating education is his first priority these days. The medal, he said, gives him “a chance to promote not only academic achievement, but also the humanitarian qualities and values I think are so crucial to society. I’ve felt for many years that the Lord gave me this spectacular medical career as a platform for this.”

“We congratulate Dr. Carson on this singular honor,” Adventist world church President Jan Paulsen said in a statement. “His service to humanity models the values and quality of life expressed by our church around the globe.”

Carson, 56, is also the author of four books: an autobiography, “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story,” “Think Big: Unleashing Your Potential for Excellence,” “The Big Picture: Getting Perspective on What’s Really Important” and, most recently, “Take the Risk: Learning to Identify, Choose and Life with Acceptable Risk.”

Medal recipients joining Carson included physician and medical researcher Dr. Anthony S. Fauci; the late human rights champion Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to serve in the U.S. Congress; sixteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.); scholar and teacher Donna Edna Shalala; and Judge Laurence H. Silberman.

Established by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 to honor service during World War II, the medal’s purpose was expanded by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to include leaders in medicine, government and the judiciary, as well as the military. The annual award is bestowed by the U.S. president to those who have made a “meritorious contribution” to the nation, a statement by the White House Press Secretary said yesterday.

Carson, who first intended to be a missionary doctor, told ANN he once worried switching to neurosurgery would mean an end to outreach. “I said, ‘Lord, neurosurgeons are always in the operating room — they don’t talk to anyone,’” Carson remembered with a laugh. “But He worked it out.”

Gender may keep some 70 percent of the Seventh-day Adventist world church’s membership out of many church leadership positions, but here in Southern Mexico altering that tradition is transforming some churches.

Though they’re not ordained as such, many women are serving as elders in their local church — an act that church leaders say wouldn’t have been possible here a decade ago.

While the creation of Women’s Ministries in some local Adventist churches has granted women the opportunity for leadership and self-development, church leaders say they’ve noticed that other changes often accompany the addition of the new ministry.

“This church didn’t used to be so friendly,” says Rocio Perez, a member of the Juarez Central Adventist Church. “Members were detached and didn’t seem to care for each other but now they feel more connected. There’s more care and concern.”

A key factor is overcoming the prevalent shyness in the local culture. “It’s been common in our churches for the adult women not to speak in public,” says Marbella Ascencio, 38, one of three elders at the church. Women leaders address the issue at weekly regional prayer breakfasts, leading Bible studies of stories in which women played a role in church leadership.

“We’ve seen a change,” Ascencio says. “We now see a more dedicated group of women.”

Women’s Ministries was originally launched at the Adventist world church’s headquarters in 1898 by Sarepta Myranda Irish Henry. She died two years later and the department fizzled out. The ministry wasn’t reestablished until 1995. Church leaders here say they began to notice its effects soon afterward.

Lupita Arenas, Women’s Ministries director for the church in North Chiapas, says men in church now see women in a different way. “They are now aware that these ladies are able to lead and to teach,” she says. “We have to accept that God has a purpose for us. What we’re trying to do is make women aware of their importance and they’re value and to exercise that leadership.”

Arenas says the ministry also helps women enroll in literacy programs. The illiteracy rate is about 20 percent of the local population, even higher among women, she says.

Central Juarez Adventist Church member Nelly del Carmen Gomez, 53, says most women in the area are marginalized because many are required to work at home, making education impossible even if there’s a school next door.

“When I was six years old I was fully involved in work at my house,” Gomez recalls.

Now she encourages other women to take advantage of available education. “Getting a diploma is a way of affirming your self esteem and growing as a person.”

Dulce Valdez is a living witness of what Women’s Ministries is doing for Adventist churches. Originally from Sonora in Northwestern Mexico, she came to Chiapas to support her husband.

“When they asked me to be a leader I was surprised,” she says, recalling that she didn’t have much experience.

Valdez now organizes 300 women every month for Women’s Ministries.

“You’re working even harder than your husband,” Arenas, the regional Women’s Ministries leader tells her.

Seventh-day Adventist chorale singers in London say collaborating with the Choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge is a chance to forge both musical and spiritual bonds.

The London Adventist Chorale spent three days in April with the Cambridge University-based choir recording a choral work that merges the groups’ respective African American and Anglican musical traditions.

“Let the Sound of Freedom,” a 14-piece song cycle for two choirs composed by LAC principal conductor Ken Burton, was originally performed last year in celebration of the bicentenary of the abolition of the Slave Trade Act in the United Kingdom.

Then broadcast on BBC Radio, the collaboration drew the attention of English composer and chorale conductor John Ritter, among other musicians and record labels, said Trevor Johnson, LAC assistant manager for Projects and Promotions.

“It is not only the music that impacts,” Johnson said, “but our lifestyle speaks to those with whom we interact both on and off the stage.”

Blending spirituals, close harmony and gospel with English choral influences, the a cappella work features lyrics drawn from memorable speeches and quotes from historical and political figures associated with peace, justice and freedom. Words from Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi are among those quoted.

The record label EMI and St. John’s Choir’s own label, ARGO, have expressed interest in “Let the Sound of Freedom,” Johnson said. A U.S. tour and other media opportunities may follow, he added.

Founded in 1981, the London Adventist Chorale was named Sainsbury Choir of the Year in 1994 and played for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in 2002.
